9/11 and the Terror of Fearism

No Comments New York City, News, Word of the Day

It is Friday afternoon on September 9th in Murray Hill NYC, just 2 days before the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and I can’t help reflecting on where I was those many years ago and the complete inability to respond to such a travesty when I heard the news. I was sitting at my desk on the 42nd floor of the Boston’s John Hancock Tower with my back to the building’s glass window wall and a clear view of Logan Airport where the planes that hit the Twin Towers originated. The only thought that cycled through my head was how my family and other residents living in NYC were responding. 10 years later, I’m living in NYC and there have already been reports of another attack on Washington D.C. and NYC and I find myself, along with the other 8 million residents, wondering what actions I should take to prepare for the weekend.

Hanalog—Back in Action

No Comments Word of the Day

We have settled back into the groove after an unbelievable 2 1/2 years in Japan and over 6 months of transitioning. The future posts on the Hanalog, as with all things, will take a new path. Although the culture will be more familiar to those in the Western hemisphere, hopefully (at least for my sake), the experiences will still be relevant and interesting.

No excuses. July posts postponed no more.

Its embarrassing. July 2006 has come and gone and there has yet to be a single post the entire month. With 55 minutes left in the Tokyo calendar … I am writing a post .. so that this blog does not go an entire month without at least 1 single entry. It’s a shame too because there have been so many exciting experiences .. from Okinomiyaki in Osaka to Tanoshikatsuta at Tokyo Disney Sea. The adventures keep on rolling .. hopefully they will be shared a little more frequently.

Word of the Day: doki doki

No Comments おもしろい, Japan, Word of the Day

kanji: どきどき (doki doki)

meaning: nervous or excited
• doki literally means palputate .. doki doki, then is to announce a raise in your heart rate; due to excitement or nervousness.

toddism: I swear, the first time I heard this someone was saying dorky dorky … and it, well, sounded kind of dorky. I found it interesting that there are other words with similar sounds … tokidoki (sometimes) for example.
